Angel R. Martinez was born in Vega Baja on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. In 1976, he moved to the United States to work for a pharmaceutical company and to complete his B.S. in Mathematics at James Madison University, which was started at the engineering school of the University of Puerto Rico. He changed careers and went to work for the U.S. Navy as an operations research analyst and later as a computer scientist. While working for the Navy, he earned an M.S. in Systems Engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and a Ph.D. in Computational Sciences and Informatics at George Mason University.

He is now retired from the federal government and is working as a professor at Strayer University in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in probability and statistics, algebra, quantitative methods, and computer science.
